My Funny Valentines ❤️❤️

Sunday Morning Becca Olcott Photography Alexandria, Virginia

This past Sunday, when Benji and Lila woke up we all got back in our bed as a fam, before breakfast, before coffee, before anything; snuggling like we do best. I found my camera and grabbed a few shots, because after all they're already growing too fast and these are the memories I want to cherish forever!

As my girl friends were chatting about how old our little ones were growing at a speed-of-lightening-pace, my beautiful GALentine Libby sent us this tear-jerker! Happy Valentine's Day. Here's to cherishing the right now, and don't forget the REAL moments are the ones we're going to miss the most.

Please be warned: you'll need a box of tissues for this one titled,

The Last Time

"From the moment you hold your baby in your arms,

You will never be the same.

You might long for the person you were before,

When you had freedom and time,

And nothing in particular to worry about.

You will know tiredness like you never knew it before,

And days will run into days that are exactly the same,

Full of feeding and burping,

Nappy changes and crying,

Whining and fighting,

Naps, or lack of naps.

It might seem like a never-ending cycle.

But don't forget...

There is a last time for everything.

There will come a time when you will feed

your baby for the very last time.

They will fall asleep on you after a long day

And it will be the last time you ever hold your sleeping child.

One day you will carry them on your hip, then set them down,

And never pick them up that way again.

You will scrub their hair in the bath one night

And from that day on they will want to bathe alone.

They will hold your hand to cross the road,

Then never reach for it again.

They will creep into your room at midnight for cuddles,

And it will be the last night you ever wake for this.

One afternoon you will sing 'the wheels on the bus'

and do all the actions,

Then you'll never sing that song again.

They will kiss you goodbye at the school gate,

The next day they will ask to walk to the gate alone.

You will read a final bedtime story and wipe your last dirty face.

They will one day run to you with arms raised, for the very last time.

The thing is, you won't even know it's the last time

Until there are no more times,

And even then, it will take you a while to realize.

So while you are living in these times,

remember there are only so many of them

and when they are gone, you will yearn for just one more day of them

For one last time."

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN WORKING TOGETHER | DC FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY

becca olcott family + edtorial photography | DC, PHILADELPHIA, MARTHA'S VINEYARD

OKAY, SO YOU'VE BOOKED WITH US, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

This weekend is full of family sessions, which inspired me to share a post about what to expect when working with me. Yes, I want you to have fun, feel comfortable and enjoy yourself, but most importantly I want you to get images out of our session that make you go, "YES, that's US!" So, here are a few tips + suggestions to make the most out of your session.  If you have any questions, I encourage you to get in touch

TIPS

Remember you're  kids are kids; meltdowns, falls, scrapes, and general fussiness happens.  A few things to help the natural occurrences with kids are...

  • Bring a second change of clothes and healthy snacks.
  • Please please please let me be the one to focus on if your kids are looking at the camera.  If you're focused on them looking at the camera, then it distracts from you looking at the camera.  And if that's the case, every other picture someone is looking away, or caught with their mouth wide open.  I promise I will to do my best to grab your children/child's attention and gaze.
  • embrace the REAL moments with your kids.  While it's always nice to have a portrait of your sweet family, I believe it's just as important, if not more so, to capture the reality of what's happening in your family life right now.

HOW LONG TO EXPECT THE PHOTO SESSION TO GO ON FOR?

Depending on what session you booked with us, we can be working from 25 minutes to 3 hours. Here's the session timing breakdown and what you can expect:

  • Mini Sessions// 20-25 minutes long.  I work quickly, but diligently.

  • Family Session// 60-90 minutes long.  I recommend working in the great outdoors, finding cozy spots that we can do together what you like to do as a family.  Let's go...

    • for walks

    • play go fish

    • paint a mural

    • dive in the ocean

    • go sledding

    • cozy up on a couch

    • read books in bed.

  • Newborn Session// 90-180 minutes long.  You might be wondering why so long? Well, newborns can be a little fussy.  Often times they need to eat, or take a break and spend some time snuggling with you, so we plan for that time. We'll typically work in your home, I bring a portable heater to make sure your new little one is comfortable with the tempature.  Here are some things to keep in mind...

    • do you have a special blanket, maybe a family heirloom, a special stuffed animal that you want to include?

    • make sure to have a few outfit changes on hand.

    • things i will typically shoot include,

1. shots of your new baby on his/her own

2. in his/her crib

3. with parents

4. with siblings

5. details of their little feet, ears, hands

6. the nursery

***If there is anything specific you want photographed, please make sure to bring it to my attention ahead of time!***

What to wear?

A lot of clients ask what should they wear... I strongly recommend being yourself.  That said, I do believe that wearing basics like jeans, a white or neutral colored dress or top always photographs beautifully.  Then it can be fun to express yourself with a colorful scarf, shoes, headband, your favorite hat, etc.   If you're funky, BE funky. If you're nerdy, BE nerdy. If you're into dressing up, DO it. As for kids, let them express themselves.  It's a fun time of life, and these are images that are going to help your memories stay alive.

How long does it take for the images to be ready?

All family images take up to 2 weeks to process.
